Cyclone Bola, which hit the region in March 1988, was the most severe storm experienced in Poverty Bay for 40 years. In this news clip from 8 March, the camera pans over flooded land on either side of the Waipāoa River. It also shows people being evacuated from Te Karaka the night before.
