Story: Geological exploration

Geological map of Nelson Province

In 1859–60, Julius Haast explored the Nelson region, finding traces of gold and discovering coal near Denniston. Observations by Haast and Hochstetter were combined in this geological map of Nelson Province, published in 1864. Although based on scattered observations, it contains most of the main geological features known today.
