Early Geological Survey map

This is a typical 19th-century geological map.It was prepared in 1887 by Alexander McKay to illustrate a report on the Mokihinui Coalfield, north of Westport. Although printed in black and white, it contains considerable detail of coal seams and is still a useful source of information.
