The dark blue lines added to this 1869 Defence Office map show the main areas of land confiscated from tribes considered to have been in rebellion against the government in the 1860s. It does not show smaller parcels of land that were also confiscated. Some tribes who had not rebelled also had land confiscated. While some confiscated areas were later transferred to Māori groupings, the land confiscations, or raupatu, had a devastating impact on the affected tribes and form one of the major grounds for treaty claims.
