Walter Mantell probably made this sketch in 1851, when he travelled to Southland to negotiate the purchase of the Murihiku block from Māori. The sketch is oriented to the south-west, with the Mataura River at the bottom. Also shown is the Waihopai stream, which enters the sea near present-day Invercargill. At the top is Ōmāui Hill, where the New River estuary joins the ocean. Localities around Invercargill – the Taurakitewaru bush and the Ōtarewa stream, for example – are also identified.
