Story: New Zealand wars

Battle of Ngātapa

Following his attack on Matawhero, Te Kooti retreated to Ngātapa, his fortress protected by precipitous hillsides. Twice Colonel George Whitmore tried to dislodge Te Kooti’s men, and finally with the noose tightening Te Kooti escaped during the night. In the television series The New Zealand wars, James Belich describes these events.
