Representatives from the Society for Research on Women present their report, Urban women, to Finance Minister Robert Muldoon in 1972. They are (left to right) Mary Mowbray, Joan Stagpoole and Margaret Shields. Mowbray and Shields had been instrumental in setting up the Society for Research on Women in 1966, when they became aware of how little social research was being done on women's changing roles. Shields went on to a career in politics, as a Labour MP from 1981 to 1990, minister of customs from 1984 to 1990 and the first minister of women's affairs from 1987 to 1990.
