In this interview Paul Spoonley, a leading sociologist at Massey University, discusses biculturalism, multiculturalism and New Zealand identity in the 21st century. Spoonley, pictured here on an Auckland street, carried out extensive research on immigration issues. Massey University played an important role in social science research from the 1970s onwards, in particular the Sociology Department under Professor Graeme Fraser in the 1980s. In 1984 social scientists based at Massey founded the journal that became SITES: A Journal of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies.
