University of Otago paleobiologist Ewan Fordyce holds the Royal Society of New Zealand's Hutton Medal for excellence in earth sciences, which he received in 2012 for 'seminal contributions in New Zealand vertebrate paleontology, particularly for whales, dolphins and penguins'. The medal is named for Captain Frederick Hutton, a geologist and zoologist who taught at the University of Otago in the 1870s. His image appears on one side of the medal.
