The vision for e-government by the New Zealand government in 2000 was followed in 2006 by the establishment at Victoria University of Wellington's School of Government of a chair of e-government. The inaugural professor was Miriam Lips, who established a master of e-government programme and initiated research into managing online identity, using social media for effective public engagement, e-campaigning in elections and the use of digital media in disaster management. Such topics illustrated the very profound impact that digital technology was having on the relationship between government and its citizens.
