Story: Māori Studies – ngā tari Māori

Opening of Te Tumu Herenga Waka meeting house

Opening of Te Tumu Herenga Waka meeting house

Victoria University's marae, Te Herenga Waka, was first established in 1980 and later relocated to a new site. This photo shows the ceremony for the opening of its magnificent meeting house, Te Tumu Herenga Waka, in 1986. University marae such as this are extremely valuable teaching resources for Māori studies, since they enable Māori protocol to be practised in an authentic and living context.
