Burning household rubbish used to be a regular part of a weekend clean-up. It was a job usually done by the man or older boys in a household, and got rid of paper, cardboard and garden waste. In the 2000s the use of household incinerators became the subject of sometimes heated debate, with some local councils banning it. Allen Mortimer, shown here using his backyard incinerator in 2008, opposed the ban on burning rubbish in Auckland’s North Shore city.
