Graham Latimer (Ngāti Kahu) was president of the New Zealand Māori Council from 1973. He is shown here outside the High Court in Wellington in 1987, when the Māori Council took a case against the government to prevent the sale of state-owned enterprises’ land. Their legal challenge was won in the Court of Appeal and the decision empowered the Waitangi Tribunal to direct the Crown to return to Māori state-owned enterprises’ assets, including land, to redress treaty claims.
