Story: Waitangi Tribunal – Te Rōpū Whakamana

Graham Latimer, 1987

Graham Latimer, 1987

Sir Graham Latimer (Ngāti Kahu) headed the New Zealand Māori Council from 1974. He is shown here outside the High Court in Wellington in 1987, when the Māori Council took a case against the government to prevent the sale of state-owned enterprises' land. Their legal challenge was won in the Court of Appeal and the decision empowered the Waitangi Tribunal to recover state-owned enterprises' assets, including land, to redress treaty breaches.
