Story: Marlborough region

Gibsontown flax mill, 1906

Gibsontown flax mill, 1906

New Zealand flax grew well in the swampy conditions common in the lower Wairau valley and other parts of lowland Marlborough. It was harvested for its fibre when prices made this profitable, such as between 1900 and 1920. Gibsontown was located between the Wairau River and Renwick, near the present-day course of Gibsons Creek.
