On 3 September 1953 Edmund Hillary married Louise Rose at Auckland. She was a talented viola player who had studied music at Auckland University and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. After the ceremony in the Diocesan School chapel, the couple walked under an arch of ice axes held by members of the New Zealand Alpine Club.
