Puke Ariki is Taranaki’s combined library, museum and information centre, opened in 2003. The site, in central New Plymouth, was formerly the important Te Āti Awa pā of the same name. The centre links to the nearby coastal walkway with its 45-metre-high ‘Wind Wand’ sculpture by Len Lye. The wooden pou (pole) in the foreground is ‘Tukotahi/Standing Together’, crafted by the Rangimarie Arts and Crafts Centre for the New Plymouth Sesquicentennial in 2001. It depicts a Māori in a korowai (cloak) welcoming a Pākehā settler in a swallow-tailed morning coat to Taranaki.
