A koroua (elder) engages in whaikōrero (speech-making) at a tangi at Ōrākei, Auckland. He is supported by local women wearing and holding greenery as a sign of mourning. By the middle of the 20th century Ngāti Whātua of Ōrākei had the last 12.5 acres (5 hectares) of its land compulsorily taken by the government, and lost its last tūrangawaewae (place to stand).
