Most of Hawke’s Bay’s pest plants are common to the rest of New Zealand, but Horseshoe Lake and a nearby farm dam in Pātangata, Central Hawke’s Bay, are home to a more unusual species. They are the only sites in the country known to host the South American yellow water lily (Nuphar lutea). As this photograph shows, the plant can choke slow-moving waterways if left unchecked. It is very difficult to get rid of. Since this photograph was taken, the lake’s lily population has been reduced and managed, but not eradicated.
