Many of the original Akaroa settlers were comparatively old, and few children were born into the community. By 1878 there were only 27 remaining members of the settlement. However, a small band of descendants continued to live in the area – among them these four young women of the Le Lievre family: from left, Aileen, Myrtle, Jeanette and Louise, photographed in the early 20th century.
