Story: French

Josephine de Malmanche (2nd of 3)

Josephine de Malmanche

There were only a few large families in the settlement. One was the de Malmanche family: Emeri de Malmanche, a farmer from Charente, arrived with his wife, their two children and his brother. He became an important landowner, and the family name lives on through many descendants and in the street, Rue de Malmanche. Josephine de Malmanche, photographed here in the late 19th century, set up a school in Akaroa with her sister, Victoire.
