Releasing the Californian green thistle beetle

Releasing the Californian green thistle beetle

Biological control of weeds and insect pests is one plank of the Landcare Research programme. Here Landcare scientist Hugh Gourlay discusses the release of the Californian green thistle beetle in South Otago with members of the Clutha Agricultural Development Board and California Thistle Action Group. The beetle’s adults and larvae feed on the thistle leaves and will restrict its spread. This should help reduce the many millions of dollars spent annually on thistle control.
