In 2004, Time magazine’s end-of-year innovation roundup cited New Zealand’s ripeSense as one of the year’s 36 greatest inventions. Developed by HortResearch, the packaging protects fruit in transit and storage, and contains an indicator that senses the ripeness of the fruit and changes colour accordingly. The sensor is on the top right of the package. The sensor will turn yellow when these pears are ripe.
