From the late 1820s some whalers began hunting right whales, rather than sperm whales, which required them to establish shore-based whaling stations. Among the earliest of these stations was that of the ex-convict John (Jacky) Guard at Port Underwood in the Marlborough Sounds. Te Papa has a magnificent collection of objects that belonged to the Guard family, including this pistol.
