Pāraerae – flax sandals

Pāraerae – flax sandals

Footwear such as these pāraerae (flax sandals) was traditionally made and worn by Māori only for long cross-country journeys. A variety of styles and materials were made for particular conditions. Cabbage-tree leaves and other plant materials could be used instead of flax, and a heavy, double-plaited sole was necessary for rocky terrain.
