Hawke’s Bay Māori settlements, around 1850

Hawke’s Bay Māori settlements, around 1850

In 1850, as Europeans began arriving in the region, Māori settlements were clustered in the area that became the cities of Napier and Hastings. There were also a number of coastal settlements north and south of Cape Kidnappers. Inland settlements were along what is now the route of State Highway 5 in the Kaweka Range, and on and around the route of State Highway 2 in Central Hawke’s Bay.
