Benefits of mechanisation have included increases in production and productivity. The growth in dairy cow numbers between 1895 and 1935 was made possible by milking machines, refrigeration and better transport. The rapid increase from 1975 was the result of the spread of dairying in Southland, Canterbury and Hawke’s Bay, and higher stock rates on farms because of irrigation and fertiliser.
