Milking before mechanisation

Before the introduction of milking machines, the whole family had to help with milking cows every morning and night. Women and children work alongside men in this primitive milking shed at Kahouri Bridge, Taranaki, in the 1890s. Mechanisation reduced the burden of labour for farming families.
