
This sketch shows Mt Taranaki (Mt Egmont) from the vicinity of Te Namu pā. Te Namu was an important stronghold of the Taranaki tribe. In 1833 its defenders, including the famed chief Wiremu Kīngi Te Matakātea, defeated an invading force of Waikato tribes.
