Near Te Namu

This sketch shows Mt Taranaki (Mt Egmont) from the vicinity of Te Namu . Te Namu was an important stronghold of the Taranaki tribe. In 1833 its defenders, including the famed chief Wiremu Kīngi Te Matakātea, defeated an invading force of Waikato tribes.
