Born near Feilding in 1891, Ida Carey moved with her parents to Tuhikaramea in 1910, the year she produced this lively pencil and ink sketch. Later she became a professional artist, praised for her ‘fresh and vivid’ portraiture. After living overseas for some years, she returned to Hamilton in the mid-1930s and helped found the Waikato Society of Arts. In the 1960s she painted a very popular series of Māori women with moko (facial tattoos).
