‘Old blockhouse at the Whau, Manukau Harbour’

‘Old blockhouse at the Whau, Manukau Harbour’

This watercolour by John Philemon Backhouse around 1871 shows Māori fishermen (foreground) in the Manukau Harbour. The harbour, originally known as Te Mānuka, was a much-sought after region because it provided access to seafood, and portages to the Pacific and the Waikato River.
