Story: Hawke’s Bay region

Settlers farming in remote inland districts faced a long journey by packhorse along bumpy tracks (which were often old Māori tracks) when the time came to send their goods to market. Here, the manager of Ōwhaoko station leads packhorses carrying wool bales down the track (later the Gentle Annie road) from Inland Pātea (Rangitīkei) to Napier.
