Story: Māori non-fiction and scholarship – ngā tuhinga me te rangahau

This genealogy shows four generations of the Williams family, a well-known missionary and early settler family, which was instrumental in the production of New Zealand's first Māori-language dictionary. The first two editions of A dictionary of the Māori language were the work of William Williams. He was followed by his son, William Leonard Williams (third and fourth editions), who was in turn followed by his son, Herbert William Williams (fifth edition). The dictionary was later edited by a committee headed by Sir Apirana Ngata, who died before its completion.
