Story: Māori newspapers and magazines – ngā niupepa me ngā moheni

Government land agent Donald McLean is one of the men standing in the left foreground of this 1863 drawing. It shows a meeting of settlers at Pāwhakairo, a pā near present-day Taradale, Napier, where McLean was then living. McLean was one of a number of Māori-speaking Pākehā who edited Māori-language newspapers in the 19th century.
