Te Waka Maori o Ahuriri (meaning the Māori canoe of Napier, a metaphor for the newspaper's role in carrying information to various places) was published between 1863 and 1871. It is likely that Donald McLean played an important role in editing the paper. The Māori motto on the masthead is 'Ko te tika, ko te pono, ko te aroha' (justice, truth and love).
