Runners as national heroes, 1960

With their victories at the 1960 Rome Olympics, coach Arthur Lydiard's runners briefly outshone rugby players as Kiwi sporting heroes. In this Nevile Lodge cartoon from the Evening Post, the schoolboy lying in the foreground is imitating Murray Halberg's exhausted collapse after winning the 5,000 metres.
