New Zealand runner Murray Halberg wins the 5,000-metres final at the 1960 Rome Olympics. He had followed a daring plan devised by his coach, Arthur Lydiard. With three laps to go Halberg sprinted well ahead of the pack. He then hung on to the lead for the rest of the race, winning by 8 metres before collapsing exhausted.
