It concerned fisheries rights and regulations in the Waitematā Harbour. In 1978 the tribunal rejected the claim. After the tribunal was given power to investigate historical claims, Hawke lodged another claim about the loss of tribal land at Takaparawhau (Bastion Point) in Auckland. In this 1977 radio interview, Hawke talks about why the issue was so important to his people of Ngāti Whātua.
