Most New Zealand children start school at the age of five. Before that, many will have attended a kindergarten or playcentre. The playcentre movement involved parents in the preschool education of their children. In 1992, these children took part in an event in the grounds of Parliament, aiming for recognition of community participation in education. Most New Zealand schools are now run by boards that are elected by parents.
