New Zealand’s major hospitals are public institutions and provide free care, at public expense, for those who need immediate or advanced, specialist medical care. Some private hospitals meet minor medical needs for a fee. The major hospitals are in the cities. Those hospitals in smaller towns that have escaped closure, now usually provide only maternity or geriatric care. People with health insurance have the option of health care through private hospitals.
