War speech

Image
War speech

An unknown Ngāpuhi chief addresses a crowd of warriors in the Bay of Islands on their way to attack enemies in the Coromandel in 1838, in this painting by Augustus Earle. Some of the warriors carry muskets, the preferred item of trade with Europeans. While many Māori were killed by muskets, far more died from introduced diseases.
