Kahikatea forests were once common on the Waikato lowlands, especially near rivers, lakes and wetlands. The drainage of swamps and clearance of vegetation to create farmland reduced their numbers. However, some groves have survived, often in scenic reserves or in Queen Elizabeth II National Trust covenanted areas on private land. This stand on a farm at Ngāhinapōuri is fenced off from stock.
