Proscenium-arch stage set, 1911

Zoom in to see details of this traditional proscenium-arch stage set from 1911. On stage are members of Fullers Vaudeville costumed as Pierrots and Pierrettes (pantomime characters). The stage has been decorated with Chinese motifs including hanging lanterns and painted maple leaves. The backdrop is a screen painted with a boating scene. The term 'backdrop' refers to the method of lowering such a screen into place from above.
