Te Ruapekapeka pā (4th of 4)

This plan of the of Ngāpuhi leader Te Ruki Kawiti at Te Ruapekapeka was based on sketches made by military officers after the battle to document the extent and nature of the defences. After their experience at Ōhaeawai the British were wary about attacking the pā directly. They shelled it heavily but only advanced on the pā after discovering that it had been abandoned. Ngāpuhi may have left the pā in an attempt to lure the British into an ambush in the nearby forest.
