From 1880 groups of Māori sent a huge number of petitions to the government's Native Affairs Committee, asking for decisions of the Native Land Court to be investigated or overturned. Several of these, in English with a Māori translation, appear in these examples from 1889. Petition no. 222 refers to the sale of a land block near Gisborne. The agents, William Rees and Wī Pere, sold the land to the NZ Settlement Company. This company was bankrupted in 1888, and many sellers received no returns for their land. Petition no. 261 refers to land blocks in Hawke's Bay.
