Sketch of the United Tribes’ flag

This is a sketch of the flag of the United Tribes, which was selected by northern chiefs as a national flag for New Zealand in 1834. It shows the colours and design of the flag, including the eight-pointed stars. The text says: ‘National Flag Selected by the assembled Chiefs of New Zealand in presence of George Lambert Esquire Captain of His Majesty’s Ship “Alligator” and James Busby Esquire British Resident Waitangi, Bay of Islands. 20th of March 1834.’
