Story: Coat of arms

Prospective coat of arms: winner (3rd of 4)

Of the three drawings sent to Britain in 1908 for consideration as a possible coat of arms for New Zealand, this is the one on which the country’s coat of arms was eventually based – after the European woman was made more modest and the Māori man less confrontational. It was by James McDonald, a draughtsman in the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts.
