‘Is that your financial statement?’ (3rd of 3)

Harry Atkinson (depicted here as a schoolboy clutching his slate) was both premier and colonial treasurer in 1882. George Grey (shown as a stern schoolmaster) was leader of the opposition but also a former governor who had appointed colonial treasurers, and a premier who had worked with them. In colonial times the annual financial statement of the government’s accounts was very much regarded as the treasurer’s personal responsibility.
