Writer and artist Samuel Butler painted this portrait of his friend John Marshman in 1863, when both men were living in Canterbury. Marshman at that time held the office of sub-treasurer for the province. The colony’s ‘ordinary revenue’ was divided between the colonial government and provincial governments, so there were nine sub-treasurers for the nine provinces.
