Story: Self-government and independence

House of Representatives

A photographic montage showing the members of New Zealand's House of Representatives in 1860. The building at the top is Government House – the seat of the governor – rather than Parliament House, where the House of Representatives sat. The utilitarian parliamentary building may have been considered too undignified for the composition.
