Improved sanitary practices and advances in medical technology increased the status of medicine and contributed to the control of primary health care by doctors. This surgical team, some wearing caps and masks, are working in an operating theatre at Palmerston North Hospital about 1919. At this time general practitioners also worked in hospitals.
